Bloomsbury Natural Capital

Natural capital is the world's stock of natural assets: rocks, ores and other minerals, soil, air, water and all living things. Bloomsbury Natural Capital (BNC) is a for-profit company set up to invest in commercial companies which also sequester carbon and boost biodiversity. The company is led by Chairman Peter Hollands, with Directors Martin Hollands and Barbara Sotowicz, and Simon Benney serving as Advisor for IT and data. BNC makes investments at Seed Capital and Series A stages, typically taking up to 5% of a company's equity initially, with potential increases to 10%-25% in subsequent funding rounds. Their main targets are projects with pre-money valuations between £2.5M-£15M. Current investments include 3% equity in Cascadia Seaweed of Canada, where Martin Hollands serves as a Senior Advisor to their Board on Ecosystem Services and Restorative Aquaculture. Cascadia farms seaweed, sells liquid seaweed extracts through its Plant Health Division, has begun bio-stimulant sales, and is conducting trials of cattle feed supplements to reduce methane emissions through its Animal Health Division. Cascadia also provides ecosystem services in Canada and Kenya. Additionally, BNC holds 1% equity in Xilva AG of Switzerland, which offers AI-enhanced environmental screening of forest investments through its 'Xilva FOREST+ PORTFOLIO' service that catalogues and rigorously assesses high integrity forests, and its 'Xilva GRADE' service providing forest evaluation methodology for investors, project developers and corporate buyers. Martin Hollands represents BNC on Xilva's Board. BNC's parent company, Bloomsbury Minerals Economics, owns 26% of Skarn Associates, which researches mines' energy sources and usage, and greenhouse gas emissions, and holds indirectly 19.5% of Skarn Water, which researches water stewardship in copper, gold and silver mining. BNC's sister company, Bloomsbury Information Capital (BIC), holds 4% equity in Minviro, which provides life cycle assessments for metals, and owns 3.3% equity in Neo Eco, which offers financially integrated sustainability reporting software.
