FrontierCities2

FrontierCities2 represents an advanced iteration of the impact accelerator program that builds upon the achievements of its predecessor. The original FrontierCities Accelerator (2014-2016) established an impressive geographic footprint by supporting 28 SMEs and startups that developed and tested smart mobility solutions across more than 45 European urban environments. This foundation has enabled FrontierCities2 to significantly expand its scope and ambition in accelerating FIWARE-enabled solutions for modern urban challenges.

The initial program demonstrated remarkable success in resource allocation, distributing €3.92 million in grant funding to address critical mobility issues in European cities. Its efficient two-step application process attracted substantial interest, with 594 initial applications narrowed to 207 in the second phase. Beyond financial support, the program provided comprehensive technical and business development assistance to selected participants, creating a holistic support ecosystem for emerging smart city technologies.

FrontierCities2 has evolved to offer €1.6 million in grant funding through two distinct Open Call strands: Market Acceleration Grants and Development & Acceleration Grants. This dual approach allows the program to support solutions at different maturity levels, from early-stage development to market-ready applications seeking wider adoption. While maintaining its core focus on smart mobility solutions, FrontierCities2 has strategically expanded into additional Smart Cities domains, recognizing the interconnected nature of urban challenges and opportunities.

As an accelerator specifically focused on FIWARE-enabled technologies, FrontierCities2 occupies a unique position in Europe's innovation ecosystem. FIWARE, an open-source platform for smart solutions development, provides a standardized framework that enhances interoperability and scalability across urban environments. By championing this technology standard while providing targeted financial support and expertise, FrontierCities2 is helping to create a more cohesive and efficient marketplace for smart city solutions throughout Europe, ultimately improving urban living conditions and resource management.
